How to Start a Daily Bible Reading Habit

We all know that reading the Bible is essential for spiritual growth, but building a consistent habit can be challenging in our busy lives. Distractions abound, and often, our Bibles gather dust on the nightstand.
But it doesn't have to be this way. Here are practical steps to make God's Word a daily delight rather than a daily duty.
1. Start Small
One of the biggest mistakes people make is biting off more than they can chew. Don't try to read an entire book in one sitting or commit to an hour of study if you haven't read in months.
Start with just one chapter or even a few verses a day. Consistency is more important than volume. Five minutes of focused reading is better than zero minutes of good intentions.
2. Pick a Consistent Time and Place
Habits are built on triggers. Whether it's first thing in the morning with your coffee or right before bed, choose a time that works for you and stick to it. Treat it like an important appointment with a friend—because it is!
Having a designated "quiet place" also helps. It signals to your brain that it's time to focus.
3. Use a Plan
Opening the Bible at random can be overwhelming (and sometimes confusing). Following a reading plan takes the guesswork out of what to read next.
- Bible in a Year: Great for a big-picture overview.
- Thematic Studies: Focus on topics like anxiety, joy, or parenting.
- Book Studies: Go deep into a single book like John or Romans.
4. Pray Before You Read
The Bible is a spiritual book, and it requires spiritual sight to understand. Before you read a single word, pause and ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes and heart.
A simple prayer like, "Lord, speak to me through your Word today," can transform reading from an academic exercise into a spiritual encounter.
5. Journal Your Thoughts
Writing down what you read helps retention and application. You don't need to write a theological treatise. Just jot down:
- One thing that stood out to you.
- One question you have.
- One way you can apply this today.
